Game of Thrones
Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) sits on the Iron Throne in HBO's "Game of Thrones."

What does the ‘Game of Thrones’ teaser tease?

A new Game of Thrones promo suggests some tantalizing possibilities for the upcoming seventh season.

The new season premieres July 16.

In the clip, titled “Long Walk” and set to the song “Sit Down” by James, the top three rivals hoping to rule the Seven Kingdoms walk to their individual thrones. Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) marches through the Red Keep in King’s Landing, eventually sitting on the Iron Throne. Jon Snow (Kit Harington) strides through Winterfell to its Great Hall. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) walks to her own throne made of stone.

Apparently the Mother of Dragons’ trip across the Narrow Sea was fruitful. She must be in the island stronghold of Dragonstone, the original seat of power for House Targaryen—and within striking distance of King’s Landing.

Speaking of Cersei … Toward the end of the clip, the icy queen exhales a breath of cold air and we see another rival: the deadly Night King. The leader of the dead army of White Walkers threatens all of Westeros from the lands Beyond the Wall.

Does that breath of air suggest that Cersei and he become allies? I’ve not finished all of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels—not that series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss follow them to the letter—so I’m just guessing. It could simply mean she’s stone cold. But this is the woman who obliterated the Great Sept of Baelor and the Faith Militant, so why wouldn’t she do something even more extreme and dangerous to remain in power?

We shall see come July 16. Season 7 will consist of seven episodes, while Season 8—the final season—will be just six episodes.
