‘Orphan Black’ preview: Pupok the scorpion returns

Good news, Clone Club, Pupok the scorpion returns in the latest episode of “Orphan Black.”

Helena (Tatiana Maslany) uses Pupok for more than spiritual guidance in “Certain Agony of the Battlefield,” airing at 8 p.m. May 23 on BBC America. Can’t say more than that, but it’s not to be missed.

This is the episode you’ve been waiting for, clubbers. The term “game-changer” gets thrown around a lot, but it totally fits. Some characters will not make it out alive.

Executive producer John Fawcett has said the episode, directed by Helen Shaver, feels like a midseason climax because it answers several questions about the Leda and Castor clones and what Dr. Coady (Kyra Harper) has been doing at the Castor military camp.

Paul (Dylan Bruce) takes action when he learns the truth behind the Castor clones’ logbooks of names. Meanwhile, Felix (Jordan Gavaris) confronts Rachel (Maslany) to see if she has any clue where Sarah (Maslany) might be.

And on the comic relief front, Donnie (Kristian Bruun) and Alison (Maslany) celebrate their success, but also hatch a plan to take their money-making venture to the “next level.” They explain their business plan to Jason Kellerman (Justin Chatwin).

But back to Pupok. At the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo in April, Fawcett and cast members Bruce, Ari Millen, Gavaris and Maria Doyle Kennedy talked about the real live scorpion on set and how Mislay created the voice for Pupok.

“She did all the sound effects for the scorpion,” Fawcett said. “She would do kind of a purring … between a cat and a Velociraptor. And then we’d do a clicking track, which she would just do with her mouth. And then she would do the voice and we would layer them together.”

Maria Doyle Kennedy and Gavaris didn’t perform with the scorpion—happily it seems. They ended up revealing what creatures really freak them out. It’s “big hairy spiders” for Gavaris, and another hairy pest for Kennedy.

“Rats are my thing, oh yeah. I’m absolutely terrified,” she said.
